A passenger ferry operated by Puerto Rico's maritime authority runs from Ceiba on the main island's east coast, a terminal built on the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base. The island also has an airport with short flights to and from the main island, plus connections to Culebra and several nearby Caribbean destinations. Within Vieques, a road network links Isabel Segunda with the outlying barrios and beaches; there is no bridge to mainland Puerto Rico.

Mosquito Bay is Vieques' signature attraction — a bioluminescent bay recognized by Guinness World Records as the brightest in the world, best experienced by kayak or small boat after dark. Former Navy lands have been set aside for ecological preservation, protecting beaches, coastal lagoons, and shoreline habitat.
